Echinacea grows abundantly in the plains and prairies of South Dakota but prefers rocky hillsides and weakly developed soils. Echinacea has a numbing, anesthetic effect on the mouth when chewed and was widely used by the plains Indians as herbal medicine to treat various ailments such as snake bites, toothaches, and even rheumatism.

The linoleum block for this linocut print was carved by hand using Flexcut carving tools. Ink rolled onto the block using Cranfield Colours Caligo ink in black and hand printed with good old-fashioned elbow grease, a glass barren, and a spoon.
